I finished 4th in 15.41 in the February Bridge Inn, which is one of those kind of acceptable but not really convincing results.
The race was won by Dan Stevens from Cardiff who was one of a group that sped away at the start. After half a mile I was left a little way off the pace with Gary H. We were definitely the mature part of the field as most of the athletes ahead were students. I wasn't sure whether the pace might ease, but I knew it was too fast for me, and by half way it was clear that Greg Helliwell was going to be the only runner in sight on the way back.
Gary was now keeping me going as he chased close behind, and I began to feel that I would have run faster if the athletes ahead weren't quite as good as they were. Eventually I got ahead of Greg and that helped me keep the pace going, we finished on the same time with Gary only a couple of seconds back.
The conditions were almost perfect, and Dan Stevens made the most of them recording one of a very few sub 15 times on the course. Dave Green from the Uni was third in 15.19 - the results did confirm that they were too fast for us oldies, and I'm willing to bet the first K was one of the faster ones, so keeping up with the early lead would have been disastrous.
