I clocked 26.22 winning the Navy 5 Miler in Washington today, in the humid conditions that wasn't too bad.
The jetlag wasn't too bad early in the morning, I didn't get much sleep, but at least I was outside the hotel looking for a taxi soon after 06.30. A not very helpful taxi driver claimed he couldn't understand the map of where the course was, but he did take me to somewhere near the course, and a much more helpful veteran gave me another map and sent me in the right direction - he claimed the map wasn't very accurate, I suspect that was an army view of a navy map.
The event was organised with military efficiency, and the navy had arranged a large turn out - although clearly the navy were going to run as a team rather than race.
At 07.50 the flag party lined up, and a seaman sang the anthem - he really had an excellent voice! There was one wheel chair, who was quite serious - at least he was quicker than the runners. Then the race started. The last 5 Mile race I ran, it felt as if Dan R. sprinted away from the line, but he's just that quick. I'm sure the two leaders were faster away from the line than that today, but unfortunately they only kept going at that pace for about half a mile, so I was left to slowly build up a lead, and by the turn back point I was comfortably the best part of 100 yards in the lead. I had hoped to be nearer 26 mins, but it is quite warm and humid here, at least I broke the course record from last year by a few seconds.
It was a good atmosphere after the race, I chatted with lots of the runners, and a reporter before walking around the Washington Monument and upto Smithsonian Metro. It was midday when I got back to the hotel, I was glad to clean up and have a rest.
