Christmas Cracker 10K, Weston-s-Mare, 9 Dec 07
In the end I won in very strong winds in Weston today, Vito looked stronger than me in the wind on the difficult sand, but the weather eased on the faster road section of the course and I could speed up a bit. Jo Kelsey won the women's race, Sian was second, again the conditions weren't really helping her.
I felt a bit for Vito, he runs with conviction and ability, and it's always good to see a local runner doing well, but it did seem a lot of pressure to be given the number 1 and expected to win.
The race starts on the sand and in the wind it was hard work, Vito had already made a positive start, but I was confident I would get a gap as we turned onto the prom. The Weston wind was just as Martin Palmer said when it's behind you, you sprint along thinking how fast do we want to go - anyway on the Vito was keeping up with me.
Things got worse on the second section of sand, not surprisingly as the sand was very soft and heavy going. Coming off the sand I knew I had to make the road section count, luckily the wind wasn't as bad and indeed gradually a gap opened. The worst of the wind was heading back onto the prom, I began to think I wouldn't be able to finish at all! The last few K were another struggle back along the sand, but I had done enough and at the last turn with 200m to go, I could finally relax as there was no point in worrying about the time. Peter Monaghan, Torbay's M40, was third, but had lost touch by the end, the South West is a tough place for vets these days! Jo Kelsey was quite a long way ahead of Sian, she is a very good athlete.
It was the worst race wind I can remember and the slowest time I've run in the history of athleticsdata.com. ..and even more reason for us athletes to be grateful to everybody who helps with the race, including Matt who videoed the event.
