Stoke Stampede, Stoke St Gregory, 26 Dec 07
It wasn't quite what I was expecting a week ago, but I won the Stoke Stampede today in 32.25, Lucy H. was the first woman home in 34 mins (and something) and Sian was second in 38.17.
It is an unusual race, there are a few quality athletes at the front, but there are a good number of Santas and it is a very small village in a secluded corner of Somerset.
A small group led the field over the first few K, and then I eased away into the lead, just about managing the trick of working at just under 100% for most of the race and not blowing up. In the end I was safely clear, Andrew Chambers was a strong second (33.19) another comparatively younger athlete with bags of talent.
The course isn't that fast, it was a bit slippery in places with mud this year, but Lucy made it look quick, she's preparing for a marathon and looking in good form. Sian was looking happier than in the wind at Weston, but will run quicker.
On the way home news reached us that Craig won at Clevedon - that will make a happy Christmas for Mike. (and well done Craig!)
... and what is beagling on Boxing Day?
